How many HBOT sessions do you need?
It's one of the first questions people ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on why you're doing it.
Medical treatment: protocols set by your doctor
For recognized medical conditions, the number of sessions follows established protocols:
- Decompression sickness and gas embolism: often one to a few treatments, sometimes more if symptoms persist.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning: commonly one to three treatments.
- Hard-to-heal wounds: typically 20 to 40 sessions, sometimes more, usually daily on weekdays.
- Delayed radiation injury: often 30 to 60 sessions.
The reason for long courses with wounds and radiation injury is that HBOT's benefits there build up over time, as new small blood vessels form. Your hyperbaric physician will review progress and adjust.
Wellness sessions: there is no proven "dose"
For wellness use, there's no established number of sessions shown to produce a specific result. Anyone who promises a particular outcome after a set number of sessions is going beyond the evidence.
Many people take a practical approach:
- Try one session to see whether you're comfortable with the chamber and the pressure.
- Try a short series, such as five sessions over a couple of weeks, and notice how you feel.
- Settle into a routine that fits your schedule and budget, if you enjoy it.
Spacing sessions
- Medical courses are often daily, five days a week.
- For wellness, many people do one to three sessions a week.
- Don't do sessions while you have a cold or congestion; ear and sinus problems are far more likely.
Planning the cost
Packages and memberships lower the per-session price, so they make sense once you know you like it. They don't make sense before you've tried a session. Check how long packages stay valid and the cancellation terms.
Talk to your doctor
If you have health conditions or take regular medications, check with your doctor before starting, and again if you plan frequent sessions over a long period.
